Summary: Recognition and payment for occupational therapy is linked to trends in medical/psychological procedures for evaluation and treatment. An historical perspective in medical and mental health depicts paradigm shifts over the last 115 years. Practitioners are invited to recognize their link to individual achievement and therefore a healthy community. The relationship of occupational therapy to payment criteria will be presented.

Presenter: Doris Shriver, OTR/L, FAOTA has over 30 years of experience providing occupational therapy, forensic assessments, life care planning and expert testimony internationally as president/owner and director of OT Resources Inc. She has been accepted as an expert in occupational therapy, vocational evaluation, rehabilitation consultation, and life care planning in Administrative Hearings, as well as State, US District, and Federal Courts.
She is an Approved Provider of Services by the Colorado State Department of Labor Workers’ Compensation Division (Qualified Rehabilitation Consultant); Federal Workers’ Compensation (OWCP); and, the Social Security Administration Office of Disability and Review (ODAR).
Ms. Shriver is a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association (FAOTA) and has served as Chairperson on many AOTA Task Force committees. She is a Certified Life Care Planner (CLCP), a Qualified Rehabilitation Consultant (QRC), and an Associate Member of the American Board of Vocational Experts (VE). She is also a member of the AOTA – American Medical Association, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Work Group for Current Procedural Terminology (CPT).
She has authored numerous publications for the American Occupational Therapy Association and was a contributor to the “Chronic Pain” chapter of the Occupational Medicine Practice Guidelines, 2nd Edition, Evaluation and Management of Common Health Problems and Functional Recovery in Workers, American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Revised 2008. She has also given presentations on Functional Capacity Evaluations at the Mountain States Employer’s Conference and to the Colorado Bar Association. She provides Occupational Therapy, Stress Management, Conflict Resolution, Ergonomics for Prevention, and ADA consultation to employers and individuals.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will appreciate the dramatic evolution of rehabilitation and / or habilitation practice in the context of sensory processing disorders for purposes of recognition, treatment, and documentation.
- Participants will know how to use the 2014 AMA/CPT codes for occupational therapy.
- Participants will have a working knowledge of how billing criteria is developed and who the players are around the world and in America.
